Smithfield Site design competition, Digbeth, Birmingham [2016]
Design team working with BPN architects
Exploring the opportunities of this sensitive site began with researching the site's past urban grain and its historical usages. Geometries, recreation grounds, alleyways and courtyards influenced the team's thinking with regard to movement through the site and a hierarchy of public and private spaces. Local vernacular, found plans and those varied past industries familiar to Digbeth, gave us a palette to further explore how to provide an appropriate level of architectural variety within the scheme.
